The idea of offshore havens was first coined in the 1930’s as a way to describe countries with favorable tax legislation. The first offshore havens were literally just “offshore” of the U.S. in the Caribbean. Companies began “placing” their corporations in these locations as a means to lower their American taxes and keep prices competitive. Thus, was the idea of offshore havens begun.
